FAQ about ASL Classes

Who can take this class? This class is for kids ages 8 through 13 who can independently sit through an online class. (Anyone ages 14 and up must sign up for my other classes) This class is for those who have little to no experience or who know the ABC's and some basic signs, but have always wanted to learn more ASL! (This class is not recommended for those who are beyond the basic level of ASL.)

What is the level of this class? This class is a beginners level class for those wanting to get a start on learning ASL. Perfect for those who have never taken an ASL class in-person or live online.

What topics will be covered? Students will learn how to introduce themselves and share basic information about themselves in a conversational setting - their first names, age, hobbies, favorite foods, etc. Students will practice having mini conversations with each other in class (with the guidance of the instructor - Sara) using the new vocabulary and phrases they learn.

What materials are needed for class? The only things students need to attend class is internet (as classes are held online via Zoom) and a device such as a laptop, computer, or tablet. Materials that cover what is learned in class will be provided weekly to students in the form of study guides and videos via Google Drive.

Can siblings take the same class day/time together? Yes, of course! However, as shared in the information above, each person taking the class must pay the class fee and be on their own separate devices while taking the class. Separate devices must be used as each individual needs space to be able to sign correctly. Sharing a device doesn't allow for proper signing space. Elbows with clash together or signs become small to avoid clashing with each other. Also, it is very difficult for the instructor to see the hands of two people in one tiny camera view online.

Can I sign my child up just to receive access to the Google Drive resources (study guides/videos) and not have them attend class in person via Zoom? No. The purpose of this class is to learn ASL in a live setting where students can get immediate feedback on their signing skills and practice conversational skills with fellow classmates. Study guides and videos are merely supplemental. They are not replacements for attending class in person. There are lots of YouTube videos out there for free that people can learn from if that's what they're looking for. This class is for those who want immediate and direct feedback on their signing skills.

Are classes recorded so we can rewatch if students miss a class? No, I do not record my classes for people to watch at a later time. A couple of reasons for this is: 1.) It takes a lot of space on my computer to record and save ten 90 minute classes a week. 2.) The purpose of these classes is to attend in-person via Zoom so I can provide students with immediate feedback on their signing. Students do not learn as well from recordings as they can from having live feedback. 3.) Some people do not wish to be recorded, so I respect everyone's privacy.

Is there an attendance policy? In order to best receive the maximum benefits of this class, attendance is important. Missing a class or two is ok and students can usually catch up. However, anyone who misses 3 classes, that's half of the content that has been missed. Many students struggle to keep up at that point and become anxious and flustered due to feeling as if they're falling behind their peers - which they often are. I will notify the parent of any student who have missed three days (via the email provided at registration) and inform them that their child will need to retake the class at a later date if they so choose. Those students will be removed from the class roster and will lose access to the Google Drive folder as the study guides/videos are simply supplemental and are not meant to be replacements for attending class in person (as mentioned above). This helps me to ensure the integrity and quality my students' signing skills and overall progress.
